Bicol University's political landscape went historic today as Kyle Reuben Bron of BU Leaders: League of Democrats was formally announced Chairperson and Student Regent (CSR) of the University Student Council (USC) for Academic Year 2025โ€“2026, after a live canvassing of the votes from 17 colleges at the BU Student Innovation and Activity Hub, Student Union Center.
The event united USC candidates from different political parties, their campaign managers, supporters, and members of the University Student Electoral Board (USEB).

โ€œThis is not only the triumph of BU Leaders, but the triumph of every Bueรฑo. And as we promised during the campaign and the Harapan, mahal namin ang mga Bueรฑos kaya nandito ang Alab Bueรฑo and we will ensure that that fighting spirit and the fire that we exhibited during the campaign period will be shown during our tenure, and that's something we promise. And we will see a more progressive and responsive university student council,โ€ Bron said.

In a council that has members from various political parties and an independent, Bron also spoke on how he is going to bring together the diverse group, โ€œI always believe that our loyalty to our party ends when our service to the people begins, and that is also the mantra that I will apply. Mas maganda nga na dynamic ang USC kasi you will get different perspectives and you will obtain different opinions and views from different lenses, from different political parties, because we all have our own unique experiences.โ€

Upon inquiry regarding the election of the student body for electing six out of the 10 party candidates from his slate, he said, โ€œI would say that the tables have turned. This academic year, part kami ni Izel and Zharisse ng minority, and now we're the majority. Pero gaya ng sinabi ko kanina, hindi na natin titingnan yung kulay or political color kapag nakaupo na o nag-oath na as USC officer because we're already bringing the name of the council with us, not the name of our political party.โ€

Danielle De Mesa, the only candidate from BU BUKLOD to win a seat, expressed mixed emotions about her victory as Finance Officer.

โ€œI feel overwhelmed nung una but then I felt sad because I am the lone candidate from BUKLOD and I expected na makakasama ko pa rin ang mga kasama ko na umupo. Pero for the students kakayanin and nandyan pa rin naman sila to support and I am happy pa rin,โ€ she said.

โ€œNandun ako since campaigning hanggang mag-proclaim syempre na-sad ako kasi alam ko yung credentials nila ate Badette, alam kong magagaling talaga sila and na-sad ako na di sila nakapasok pero now ready na ko na ipakita na ano ba talaga ang Buklod para sa estudyante at kasama ang estudyante.โ€

Independent candidate Justin Davin Reynoso secured the post of Internal Vice-Chairperson in a tight race expressing his feeling of relief, โ€œItโ€™s definitely an uphill battle pero naipanalo pa rin natin na kahit despite the delays and setbacks, we pushed through at tuloy ang ganoong energy and momentum sa pagiging IVC natin sa susunod na konseho.โ€

Commenting on the narrow victory margin, he said, โ€œMaganda po kasi the Bueรฑos are given actual options para pagpilian kung sinong IVC talaga ang nagmemeet sa vision nila and what they think the USC needs moving forward and kahit small ang margins po rito, our service will be bigger and would be for everyone.โ€

He also affirmed his commitment to his platform, known as โ€˜Tsinelas Leadershipโ€™: โ€œYes confident po tayo dyan kasi nung umupo tayo as CSC representative, very pressuring siya as a first year student and incoming 2nd yr na mafulfill yung energy and commitment pero natapos ang term na naging top performing officer of the council and ganun din ang energy na gusto natin mafulfill sa USC kaya bibigyan natin sila ng tsinelas leadership na kailangan natin sa panahon ngayon.โ€

Addressing concerns about legislative performance, Reynoso said, โ€œIn terms of GLC, nagawa naman sa term ni Ate Jam na maschedule nang maayos dahil simula pa lang ay pinapirmahan na niya ang proposals despite the calamities. Then we will consider possible options para ma-meet ang quorum gaya ng consistently pagpost ng absent, late, and excuses kasi effective siya. And with this, these student leaders will show up with their responsibility.โ€

โ€œBeing a member of the GLC despite not having the position, klaro naman ang commitment natin sa pagiging active natin sa mga discussions, being early, and participate on discussion that matter. Hindi lang tayo basta umo-oo sa resolution at face value. Inaaral natin kung paano mag-improve hindi lang para kumontra kundi para i-improve โ€™yung amendments, nature, and grounding nila. And para makita talaga na well-backed and confident โ€™yung author nito at handang-handa na yung resolutions to be lobbied to higher offices. So ayun tayo ay marunong talaga sa parliamentary rules and procedures and how to manage the GLC kasi naging internal affairs university councilor na tayo.โ€

When asked about the colleges that are less aware of the process, Reynoso underlined that his initial step would be to come up with a handbook for student leaders who are not aware of parliamentary procedures.

As an Alliance of Student Parliamentarians officer, which is a university-based organization, he explained that they have already been implementing such programs and intend to further advance them.

He further stated that as the incoming IVC, he acknowledges the organization's advocacy as an essential support system to enable student leaders to better comprehend parliamentary processes.

Outgoing Chairperson and Student Regent Stacy Daniel Alamares gave parting words for the new USC officers. โ€œSeeing na yung council natin ngayon ay composed of different people from different political parties and ang advice ko para sa kanila ay unang-una ay mabuo muna ang bond sa loob kasi pag okay sila sa loob of course it will radiate to their programs and projects kasi afterall USC is composed of 10 people. No more politicking and mag-focus kung ano ang pinangako natin during HARAPAN and campaign pati kung ano ang purpose sa pag-serve sa Bueรฑos.โ€

On Kyle Reuben Bronโ€™s assumption of the highest post, Alamares said, โ€œHaving the opportunity to work with Kyle, I already saw his work ethics, his capabilities, and I believe na kaya ni Kyle pamunuan. Of course, as the outgoing CSR, I will support the incoming CSR and I believe that the Bicol University, the Bueรฑos are in the right hands.โ€

The former chairperson also reminded Bron of the regentโ€™s greater responsibility, โ€œAs a student regent, kailangan nating lumaban especially when it comes to decisions ng administration natin na hindi pro-student, kailangan nating labanan. Wag tayong matakot, wag tayong maging puppet ng admin. Lumaban tayo pag kinakailangan, kasi afterall regent tayo ng mga estudyante at hindi ng administrasyon.โ€

With a diverse membership of leaders and a fresh mandate from the student body, the new University Student Council is well-positioned to take Bicol University to a new era of student activism and representation.
