In a defining moment for medical education and student leadership in the country, Jerralson Paguio of Bicol University College of Medicine (BUCM) was named Top 2 in the “Natatanging Mag-aaral ng Medisina ng Pilipinas 2026” during the awarding ceremony on April 11.
The award, one of the highest recognitions for Filipino medical students nationwide, placed Paguio among the most distinguished future physicians in the Philippines.
He was selected from nominees representing medical schools across the country.
From an initial pool of candidates, Paguio first emerged as one of three nominees from BUCM to compete at the NCR–Southern Luzon regional level.
Out of 18 regional contenders, he advanced to the Top 5, earning a place among the best in the region.
He then progressed to the national stage, where top regional awardees from Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, and APMC-SN competed in a rigorous evaluation process, including a closed-door interview held from March 21 to 23, which accounted for 30% of the final assessment.
More than a recognition of academic distinction, the award highlights Paguio’s holistic excellence, spanning research, leadership, and community engagement.
His work reflects a growing model of medical leadership that transcends the classroom and responds directly to the needs of underserved communities.
During the awarding ceremony, a key portion of Paguio’s speech centered on the role of future physicians in returning to serve communities and patients.
he said.
His statement encapsulated the ethos of his journey, grounded not in perfection, but in perseverance, growth, and an unwavering commitment to service.
It also underscored his advocacy for medicine to be a lifelong calling to return to the people, especially those in greatest need.
In a congratulatory post, BUCM Dean Dr. Ofelia Samar-Sy described Paguio’s recognition as a testament to the BUCM's mission to shape healthcare professionals who embody excellence and strong moral grounding.
"This achievement reflects the heart of BUCM, producing doctors who are not only excellent, but compassionate and committed to serve," she said.
She added that such distinctions demonstrate not only academic prowess, but true commitment to serving communities as students of humanity.
